German Chocolate Pie

Most of us have heard of chocolate pie, chocolate cream pie, French Silk pie and more. But chances are you haven't heard of German chocolate pie.

An American Classic?
Okay, no. That's apple pie. But since the creation of German chocolate, many great desserts have been created using it. You could say German chocolate is a sort of European chocolate since it was created by an Englishman, but that's a stretch. He happened to work for the Baker's Chocolate company, who marketed it and still corners the market on German chocolate. And Germany manufactures some find German chocolates--some even refer to them as gourmet chocolate--but they don't get the credit for German chocolate as we know it for baking purposes. Sorry Germany!

Now, let's get back to our discussion of German chocolate pie. German chocolate pie is based off of german chocolate cake, as are many recipes like German chocolate cheesecake and upside down German chocolate cake. If you love German chocolate cake, you're sure to love either of these desserts as well. Here's an easy recipe for German chocolate pie:

German Chocolate Pie

2 oz. German baking chocolate
1/4 cup butter
3/4 cup sugar
Pinch salt
1/2 cup light corn syrup
3 eggs
1/4 cup milk
1 1/2 Tablespoon cornstarch
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1/4 cup coconut
1 9-inch unbaked pie shell

1. Preheat oven to 375.
2. Melt chocolate in a double boiler.
3. Add butter, sugar, salt and corn syrup. Stir until dissolved. Cool.
4. Beat eggs. Add milk and cornstarch to eggs and mix well.
5. Add egg mixture to chocolate mixture.
6. Stir in vanilla, pecans and coconut.
7. Pour into pie shell.
8. Bake 35 to 45 minutes or until filling is set.
