Swiss Chocolate

When you think of Swiss chocolate you probably think of Nestle, right? Well, maybe you do, maybe you don't. It really depends on if you bake a lot or not or if you're a chocoholic.

The Origins of Swiss Chocolate

it's long been a known fact that people think that Swiss chocolates are one of the ultimate indulgences when it comes to gourmet chocolate. In fact, most European chocolate (like Belgian chocolate, Swiss chocolate and Dutch chocolate) is considered to be somewhat gourmet. But each of these kinds of chocolate is unique in flavor and texture, and no two are alike.

What sets Swiss chocolate apart from the others is the fact that one of their own created milk chocolate. Yum! The man who invented it was Daniel Peter. He mixed chocolate liquor with condensed milk to create this marvelous treat that is so widely used today. Later, powdered milk was also used to create milk chocolate. The problem with this type of Swiss chocolate at the time was that it was too costly. Enter Milton Hershey and the industrial revolution.

The industrial revolution made mass production of many things a reality, which also meant that things that were once costly suddenly became more affordable. Milton Hershey found a way to mass produce milk chocolate, so it was no longer a luxury. And it still had the great quality of the Swiss chocolate version. Today, Hershey is strong competition for Swiss chocolates, but some will never be convinced that international chocolates are better than American.

A Milk Chocolate Recipe

Here is a recipe that combines a sort of Swiss chocolate (okay, it's Swiss Miss hot chocolate mix) and a couple of dairy products to create a chocolatey treat:

Chocolate Soup

3-4 scoops vanilla ice cream

1/4 cup hot fudge

1/4 cup milk

1 teaspoon Swiss Miss mix hot chocolate mix

1. In blender, scoop out ice cream.

2. Heat hot fudge in a microwave-safe bowl, covered, for 20-35 sec.

3. Pour hot fudge, milk, and hot chocolate mix in blender.

4. Blend until the mixture is as smooth as you want.

5. Serve hot (by heating in the microwave for 45-60 seconds) or cold.

Enjoy!
